Presenters at this event will touch upon important “Meaningful Use” Rule topics and how they affect HRSA grantees and the safety net community.
The long awaited “Meaningful Use” Final Rule was released with great anticipation within the healthcare community on July 13. The” Meaningful Use” Rule was authorized under The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) which established a three stage incentive payment program under CMS for the "meaningful use" of certified EHR technology. The first stage of the CMS EHR incentive program begins in 2011 and is designed to support providers including health centers, rural health facilities, critical access hospitals, and eligible professionals transition and instill the use of EHRs in meaningful ways to help our nation to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of patient health care.
In addition, one important criteria for qualifying for CMS’s EHR incentive program and demonstrating meaningful use is that providers adopt, implement, upgrade to certified EHR technology. The EHR standard is overseen by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. The EHR certification standard provides confidence to providers and patients that their EHR products and systems are secure, can maintain data confidentially, can work with other systems to share information, and can perform a set of well-defined functions.
